The Asian Studies Center of the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile invites you to participate in the 10th International Conference on Korean Studies (hereafter SIEC). Sponsored by the Academy of Korean Studies (Nº AKS-2018-C31, 18C31), the SIEC will take place at the San Joaquin Campus of the University in Santiago, Chile, on the 17th and 18th of October, 2018.
Conference Topics
In the second half of the 19th century, the Korean peninsula started a process of modernization to join the Western-oriented international order. In 1910, Japan annexed the kingdom by force and ruled Korea until August 15, 1945, when Japan surrendered to the Allied Forces. However, the situation developed in a way that Koreans neither expected nor desired. With the collapse of Japanese imperial rule, the Soviet Union and the United States occupied the Northern and Southern areas of the 38th Parallel, respectively. The two superpowers supported separate ideologies and political regimes, resulting in the division of the country into North Korea and South Korea in 1948. The Korean War began on June 25, 1950 and while an armistice agreement was signed on July 27, 1953, the war has yet to end with a peace treaty. How have the two Koreas undertaken different political, economic, and socio-cultural changes over the past 70 years? Will the two Koreas be unified in the near future? How have the two Koreas encountered one another with fraternal affection as well as intense hostilities at the same time? To analyze these topics from multiple perspectives, the following experts have been invited to the 10th SIEC:
